Angel Trumpet

Brugmansia spp.

Angel's Trumpet (Brugmansia) is a dramatic tropical shrub or small tree producing enormous, pendulous trumpet-shaped flowers up to 50cm long in white, yellow, peach, or pink. The intoxicating fragrance intensifies at night. All parts of the plant are highly toxic and must be kept away from children and pets.

Care Guide

☀️

Light Requirements

Full sun to partial shade. The dramatic trumpet flowers contain both male and female reproductive parts (perfect flowers) and produce abundant nectar to attract moths and bats as pollinators at night.

🌡️

Temperature

18°C - 27°C. Angel Trumpet originates from the Andes Mountains but thrives in Malaysia warmth. Some varieties actually flower more reliably in tropical heat.

💧

Humidity

60% - 80%. Consistent moisture supports the large, soft leaves and heavy flower production. Angel Trumpet benefits from humid air, but leaves should still dry between wet periods to reduce fungal pressure.

🌧️ Good news for Malaysia: Your home's natural humidity is already helping. Focus on airflow instead to prevent fungal issues.

🪱

Soil Preference

Well-draining, fertile soil rich in organic matter. Angel Trumpet has high nutrient demands. Incorporate compost, aged manure, or slow-release fertiliser into the planting hole.

💦

Watering & Fertilizer

Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. The large, thin leaves transpire rapidly. Water stress causes leaf drop and flower abortion. Feed with a phosphorus-rich fertiliser every 2-3 weeks during the flowering period to maximize bloom production.

💭 Still unsure? Stick your finger 2 cm into the soil. If it feels dry, water. If it's moist, wait. You'll get it right.

General Care

Prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage new flowering wood. Hard pruning (cutting back by 1/2 to 2/3) rejuvenates old plants. Angel Trumpet flowers on new growth, so pruning stimulates more branches and therefore more flowers.

🌱

Propagation

Semi-hardwood cuttings root easily in 3-4 weeks in warm Malaysia conditions. Use hormone rooting powder to speed root formation.

⚠️

Pet Friendly?

EXTREMELY TOXIC. ALL PARTS contain tropane alkaloids. Ingestion of even small amounts causes severe poisoning: dilated pupils, rapid heartbeat, hallucinations, and in large amounts, death. This is one of the most dangerous garden plants. Keep completely away from children and pets.

💊

Medicinal Benefits

Has no safe medicinal use. Historically misused for its potent tropane alkaloids, which cause dangerous hallucinations and delirium. All traditional uses are extremely hazardous and not recommended under any circumstances.

🎨

Other Uses

Grown purely for ornamental purposes due to the spectacular hanging trumpet flowers. The intoxicating night fragrance is one of the strongest of any tropical plant.

🐛

Pests & Diseases

Aphids cluster on tender new growth and flower buds, sucking phloem sap. Spray with neem oil or insecticidal soap.

💡

Smart Tanam Tip

"Angel Trumpet flowers bloom on new growth in waves. You may get multiple flushes of heavy blooming separated by rest periods. This is normal. The flowers last only 1-2 days but are produced in such abundance that flowering appears continuous during peak season."

Common Mistakes in Malaysia

  • Overwatering due to high humidity: Malaysia's moisture-rich air means soil dries slower. Most plant deaths come from root rot, not underwatering.
  • Poor airflow: High humidity + still air = fungal issues. Move plants where air circulates naturally (near windows, not in corners).
  • Ignoring the monsoon season: During heavy rain, reduce watering. Your plant is already getting moisture from the environment.
  • Direct afternoon sun: Malaysian midday sun is intense. Even sun-loving plants can scorch. Morning sun is best.
🌍

Tips for Malaysia's Climate

  • Use well-draining soil: Add perlite or cocopeat. Heavy soil + humidity = rot. Your soil should dry out between waterings.
  • Water in the morning: Wet foliage at night is a recipe for fungal problems in humid climates. Early morning watering lets leaves dry quickly.
  • Repot in spring: Before the dry season, refresh soil to prevent salt buildup and improve drainage.
  • Watch for pests during monsoon: Wet season brings aphids, spider mites, and scale insects. Check undersides of leaves weekly.
  • Increase airflow: Place a small fan nearby if the plant is indoors. Circulating air prevents humidity-related issues.
