Banana
Musa spp.
The world's largest perennial herb. In Malaysia, every part is used: the fruit for snacks, the leaves for *Nasi Lemak*, and the heart (*Jantung*) for *Ulam*.
Full direct sun is best because banana grows huge leaves quickly and needs strong light to feed that fast growth and heavy fruiting.
24°C - 35°C is ideal. Banana loves Malaysian heat and grows fastest when warmth stays constant.
High humidity helps because the leaves are broad and lose water quickly, especially in windy weather.
🌧️ Good news for Malaysia: Your home's natural humidity is already helping. Focus on airflow instead to prevent fungal issues.
Use deep, rich soil that holds moisture but still drains. Banana is thirsty and hungry, but the roots still fail if the base stays swampy.
Keep the soil consistently moist because banana is basically a giant water-moving machine. It needs steady feeding too, especially nitrogen early on, because it is building a huge amount of leaf and stem mass before fruiting.
💭 Still unsure? Stick your finger 2 cm into the soil. If it feels dry, water. If it's moist, wait. You'll get it right.
Remove dead leaves, manage suckers, and support heavy fruit bunches. After fruiting, that main stem is finished, so the next healthy sucker becomes the future crop.
Propagation is usually by suckers from the main corm. This works well because each pup is already part of the parent’s underground system.
The fruit and plant are safe, though the sap can stain fur and clothing.
Potassium-rich fruit; sap used traditionally for minor skin cuts.
Leaves are used as biodegradable plates and cooking wraps.
Sigatoka leaf spot weakens the leaves that power fruit production, while banana weevil attacks the base and undermines the whole plant.
"A banana “tree” is not really a tree. The fruiting stem is temporary, so good banana care is really about raising the next pup while the current stem finishes its crop."
