Indian Jujube
Ziziphus mauritiana
Indian Jujube (Ziziphus mauritiana), or Pokok Bidara, is a hardy fruit tree producing small, crisp, apple-like fruits eaten fresh or dried. Deeply significant in Islamic tradition, Bidara leaves are used in ritual cleansing (mandi bidara). The tree is drought-tolerant and well-suited to Malaysia's warm tropical climate.
Full sun. Indian Jujube responds quickly to light quality; weak light usually gives lanky growth and slower recovery after pruning or harvest.
20°C - 35°C (68°F - 95°F). This range keeps Indian Jujube metabolically active, while abrupt temperature shifts often show up as stress, slower growth, or bud drop.
40% - 60%. Indian Jujube tolerates local humidity better when air movement is good; stale humid air is where fungal trouble usually starts.
🌧️ Good news for Malaysia: Your home's natural humidity is already helping. Focus on airflow instead to prevent fungal issues.
Deep, fertile, well-draining loamy soil with steady organic matter and good moisture retention.
Low water needs once established. Extremely drought-tolerant. For Indian Jujube, water by soil feel rather than fixed dates. When pore spaces stay flooded, roots lose oxygen and rot starts below the surface.
💭 Still unsure? Stick your finger 2 cm into the soil. If it feels dry, water. If it's moist, wait. You'll get it right.
Once established, requires almost no maintenance. Tolerates neglect, irregular watering, and poor soils. Prune only to remove dead wood or control size. Well-suited for unmanaged groundcover or abandoned gardens. Long-lived and can remain productive for many years.
Seeds or grafting (used as rootstock for other Ziziphus varieties). Indian Jujube propagates more reliably from healthy, actively growing material, especially when humidity and warmth are stable after planting.
Generally safe.
Fruits are excellent sources of vitamin C, antioxidants, and minerals like potassium and iron. Widely used in traditional Ayurvedic and Middle Eastern medicine for immune support, stress relief, and general wellness. Seeds, leaves, and roots also used in herbal preparations with confirmed anti-inflammatory properties.

Minimal pest issues; fruit flies only in overripe fruit on trees. For Indian Jujube, weekly early checks work best; local humidity can accelerate outbreaks once canopies become crowded and still.
"Very drought-tolerant once mature."
