Cashew
Anacardium occidentale
The Cashew tree (Anacardium occidentale) produces both the famous cashew nut and the large, juicy cashew apple (buah gajus), which is eaten fresh or pressed into juice in Malaysia. A drought-tolerant, coastal-adapted tree that grows vigorously in Malaysia's tropical heat and fruits reliably year after year.
Full sun. Cashew responds quickly to light quality; weak light usually gives lanky growth and slower recovery after pruning or harvest.
20°C - 32°C. This range keeps Cashew metabolically active, while abrupt temperature shifts often show up as stress, slower growth, or bud drop.
60% - 80%. Cashew tolerates local humidity better when air movement is good; stale humid air is where fungal trouble usually starts.
🌧️ Good news for Malaysia: Your home's natural humidity is already helping. Focus on airflow instead to prevent fungal issues.
Deep, fertile, well-draining loamy soil with steady organic matter and good moisture retention.
Water regularly. Fertilize monthly. Cashew does better with wet-dry balance than constant saturation. Overwatering blocks root aeration, then yellowing and stunting follow.
💭 Still unsure? Stick your finger 2 cm into the soil. If it feels dry, water. If it's moist, wait. You'll get it right.
Prune annually to maintain manageable height and strong framework. Remove crossing branches and train young trees to 3-4 main stems to encourage lateral branching and better fruit distribution. The distinctive cashew apple (false fruit) is often wasted but edible. sweeter than many realize. Mature trees need light pruning only to remove dead or diseased wood.
Seeds or grafting (grafting recommended for faster fruiting). Cashew propagates more reliably from healthy, actively growing material, especially when humidity and warmth are stable after planting.
The shell contains caustic urushiol-like oils, so nuts must be professionally processed before eating. The cashew apple is edible, but large amounts may still upset sensitive pets.
Nutritional benefits from nuts.
Nuts and fruit.
Tea mosquito bug. With Cashew, prevention beats rescue: inspect undersides regularly and keep airflow moving to slow pest and fungal escalation.
