Mexican Heather
Cuphea hyssopifolia
Cuphea (Cigar Plant or Mexican Heather) is a compact ornamental shrub producing small tubular flowers in red, orange, or purple almost continuously throughout the year. Extremely heat-tolerant, low-maintenance, and long-blooming, it is widely used for garden borders, containers, and edging in Malaysian tropical gardens.
Full sun to partial shade. For Mexican Heather, stronger light usually means steadier sugar production, so leaves, flowers, or fruit can be maintained without stress.
18°C - 32°C. Mexican Heather handles Malaysian warmth well, but sudden cold drafts or heat spikes can shock tissues and slow recovery.
50% - 80%. Mexican Heather tolerates local humidity better when air movement is good; stale humid air is where fungal trouble usually starts.
🌧️ Good news for Malaysia: Your home's natural humidity is already helping. Focus on airflow instead to prevent fungal issues.
Well-draining, fertile soil rich in organic matter; slightly acidic to neutral pH is preferred.
Keep soil slightly moist. Use moisture checks for Mexican Heather instead of routine overwatering. Root systems need fresh oxygen between watering cycles to stay healthy.
💭 Still unsure? Stick your finger 2 cm into the soil. If it feels dry, water. If it's moist, wait. You'll get it right.
Prune regularly to maintain shape. Mexican Heather responds well to consistent maintenance, because cleaner structure means less disease pressure and better energy allocation.
Cuttings. For Mexican Heather, propagation success rises when the parent stock is vigorous and new cuttings/divisions are kept warm and evenly moist.
No strong evidence of toxicity, but not well-studied.
Not commonly used medicinally.
Garden borders and hedges.
Whiteflies, aphids. With Mexican Heather, prevention beats rescue: inspect undersides regularly and keep airflow moving to slow pest and fungal escalation.
"Regular trimming promotes bushier growth."
