Water Lettuce
Pistia stratiotes
A floating aquatic plant with velvety leaves forming rosettes. Used in ponds to provide shade and filter water, it is a rapid grower that can double its population in just a few days under ideal conditions.
Full sun. Water Lettuce can survive lower light for a while, but performance drops as energy production falls, so growth becomes slower and softer.
22°C - 35°C. Water Lettuce handles Malaysian warmth well, but sudden cold drafts or heat spikes can shock tissues and slow recovery.
High. Water Lettuce tolerates local humidity better when air movement is good; stale humid air is where fungal trouble usually starts.
🌧️ Good news for Malaysia: Your home's natural humidity is already helping. Focus on airflow instead to prevent fungal issues.
Aquatic species; floats directly on nutrient-rich water (no potting soil needed). For Water Lettuce, loose structure prevents root suffocation; compact wet soil traps water and cuts off root oxygen.
Grows directly in water. For Water Lettuce, water by soil feel rather than fixed dates. When pore spaces stay flooded, roots lose oxygen and rot starts below the surface.
💭 Still unsure? Stick your finger 2 cm into the soil. If it feels dry, water. If it's moist, wait. You'll get it right.
Can become invasive and quickly cover water surfaces if not controlled. Water Lettuce responds well to consistent maintenance, because cleaner structure means less disease pressure and better energy allocation.
Offsets. For Water Lettuce, propagation success rises when the parent stock is vigorous and new cuttings/divisions are kept warm and evenly moist.
Not safe if ingested.
Used traditionally for skin conditions.
Water filtration.
Minimal. For Water Lettuce, weekly early checks work best; local humidity can accelerate outbreaks once canopies become crowded and still.
