Watermelon
Citrullus lanatus
Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) is a sprawling vine producing large, sweet, water-rich fruits. over 90% water by weight. One of Malaysia's most popular fruits, grown commercially in Johor, Selangor, and Kedah, and in home gardens. The juicy flesh is a year-round heat-beating staple in Malaysian households.
Full sun (6+ hours). Watermelon can survive lower light for a while, but performance drops as energy production falls, so growth becomes slower and softer.
20°C - 32°C. Watermelon handles Malaysian warmth well, but sudden cold drafts or heat spikes can shock tissues and slow recovery.
50% - 70%. Watermelon benefits from humid air, but leaves should still dry between wet periods to reduce fungal pressure.
🌧️ Good news for Malaysia: Your home's natural humidity is already helping. Focus on airflow instead to prevent fungal issues.
Deep, fertile, well-draining loamy soil with steady organic matter and good moisture retention.
Water regularly. Fertilize during growth. Watermelon does better with wet-dry balance than constant saturation. Overwatering blocks root aeration, then yellowing and stunting follow.
💭 Still unsure? Stick your finger 2 cm into the soil. If it feels dry, water. If it's moist, wait. You'll get it right.
Allow space for vines to spread. For Watermelon, timely pruning and hygiene are preventive care: better airflow, fewer weak shoots, and steadier growth quality.
Seeds. Watermelon establishes faster when propagation material is fresh and disease-free, with gentle humidity and no waterlogging.
Flesh is safe; seeds are not toxic but should be limited to avoid digestive issues.
Hydrating and rich in vitamins.
Fresh fruit and juice.
Aphids, fruit flies. Watermelon is easier to protect with routine scouting and airflow management, because pests and fungal spots spread fast in stagnant humid conditions.
"Best grown on the ground with plenty of space."
