ZZ Plant
Zamioculcas zamiifolia
ZZ Plant is prized for its glossy, dark green leaflets and exceptional tolerance for neglect. One of the most drought-tolerant and low-light-tolerant houseplants available. Perfect for busy plant parents.
Low to bright indirect light works well. It survives dim spaces because it stores reserves underground, but brighter indirect light still gives faster, stronger growth.
18°C - 27°C is comfortable for it. Like many indoor tropicals, it dislikes cold shocks more than normal household warmth.
Moderate humidity is enough. The underground rhizomes store water, so dry indoor air is usually less of a problem than overwatering.
🌧️ Good news for Malaysia: Your home's natural humidity is already helping. Focus on airflow instead to prevent fungal issues.
Use loose, draining soil so the rhizomes stay firm instead of sitting in constant moisture. Wet heavy soil is the main enemy.
Water only after the soil dries fully. ZZ Plant stores water in thick underground rhizomes, so repeated watering “just in case” is what usually kills it. Feed lightly a few times a year; it does not need much.
💭 Still unsure? Stick your finger 2 cm into the soil. If it feels dry, water. If it's moist, wait. You'll get it right.
Keep the leaves clean and repot only when the plant really fills the pot. It is naturally slow and steady, so do not treat slow growth like a problem.
Division is quickest because each section already has stored energy in the rhizome. Leaf cuttings work too, but they are slow because the plant first has to build a brand-new storage organ underground.
Toxic to cats and dogs (ASPCA confirmed). Contains calcium oxalate crystals throughout the plant. Ingestion causes oral irritation, drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing. Wash hands after handling as sap can irritate skin and eyes.
Used in traditional medicine in parts of East Africa (Tanzania) for treating ear pain and inflammatory conditions, though scientific evidence is limited.
Excellent air-purifying plant. Widely used in offices, shopping malls, and low-light commercial spaces because of its near-indestructible nature. One of the top recommended plants for offices and beginners.
Very pest-resistant overall. Mealybugs and scale may appear, but the real danger is root rot from too much water, especially in low light.
"If a ZZ Plant looks unhappy, check the soil before anything else. Most problems come from watering too often, not too little."
